How it works

You supply the mid-market rate rather than the tool fetching one, because this site makes no third-party requests. That is a deliberate constraint, and it has a useful side effect: comparing the rate you were actually offered against the mid-market rate is exactly how you find the spread you are paying.

The spread is usually the larger cost. A transfer advertised as fee-free routinely carries a 2–4% margin buried in the rate, which on a substantial transfer dwarfs any explicit fee.

Received = (amount × rate × (1 − spread)) − fee

  • Mid-market rate — the true interbank rate, quoted publicly
  • Spread — the margin taken against that rate
  • Effective rate — what you actually got, after spread and fees

Worked example

Converting 500,000 at a mid-market rate of 0.0119 with a 2.4% spread and a 1,500 fee

Inputs

Amount500,000
Mid-market rate0.0119
Spread2.4%
Fee1,500

Results

You receive5,789.78
Total cost160.22
Effective rate0.011580

The advertised fee costs 17.85 of the target currency. The spread costs 142.37 — eight times more, and it is never quoted anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have to enter the rate myself?

Because the site makes no third-party requests at all — that is what lets every tool here run without tracking. Enter the rate from any source; the calculator handles the arithmetic and the fee analysis.

How do I work out my provider’s spread?

Divide the rate you were offered by the mid-market rate at the same moment, and subtract from one. Most providers do not disclose it, so this is the only way to see it.

Is a zero-fee transfer actually cheaper?

Usually not. Providers advertising no fees almost always take a wider margin on the rate instead. Compare the amount actually received, which is the only figure that cannot be dressed up.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted to us or stored.
